RESOURCES
Organizations concerned with farm animal welfare and related topics:
Ethical Omnivore Movement
focuses on responsible animal stewardship, from regenerative grazing practices and humane standards to health info, consumer/producer networks, etc. Many well informed and good humored people, including its founder Lana Salant, constantly scour the internet for relevant info to share with this very active group. Highly recommended.
Humaneitarian
is a lovely website created by Caroline Abels. Her thoughtful content explores practical ways for phasing CAFO products out of omnivorous diets.
Compassion in World Farming (CIWF)
was founded in 1967 by English dairy farmer Peter Roberts, thus becoming the first organization (to our knowledge) dedicated to minimizing the suffering of farm animals. They've continued their advocacy and activism up to the present day, with many achievements to show for it. They now have both US and UK offices as well as ones in Italy, France, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic and China
Farm Forward
also aims to "reduce farmed animal suffering, and advance sustainable agriculture". They boast an admirable list of achievements.
Main Street Project
works to expand implementation of their regenerative poultry raising model, particularly among immigrant farmers.
Regeneration International
focuses on education and implementation of regenerative agricultural practices.
Vital Awareness
is another helpful similarly-minded website looking to inform consumers and connect them with reputable producers.
Holistic Land Management and Regenerative Grazing
Savory Global
While many object to factory farms from an animal welfare perspective, Allan Savory has approached the topic by reversing desertification through regenerative land management practices, which necessarily involves grazing and foraging animals. His sobering yet inspiring 2013 TED speech is still the essential introduction to the evolution of and rationale behind Holistic Planned Grazing (HPG). The functions of the organization are divided accordingly:
- Institute the "brain trust"
- Network "advocates, trains, implements and facilitates holistic management..."
- Platform "developed to provide online support and training for farmers and land managers"
- Land to Market a verification label promising "The World’s First Verified Regenerative Sourcing Solution for meat, dairy, wool and leather"
Regenerating Grassland
a website and facebook group promoting Savory's HPG practices
Grassfed Exchange
a "volunteer, non-profit organization of regenerative ranchers and grassfed industry supporters" whose desire is "to provide a means of education and exchange of grassfed genetics between producers". GFX hosts conferences (annually, we believe) which serve the aforementoned purposes.
